Description

Each piece of Chiyogami paper is hand silk-screen printed following centuries old Japanese traditions. Colours are applied in individual layers which requires the art of registering each screen to precision. The base paper is a combination of kozo and sulphite and the pigments used are fade resistant resulting in a strong, soft and versatile decorative paper suitable for a range of uses such as, embellishments for stamping, scrapbooking, card making, origami, iris folding, decorative packaging, covering frames, box making, collage, book binding, envelope lining, doll’s house wallpaper and many more!

Chiyogami, which means thousand generation (chiyo) paper (gami), was developed in Japan during the Edo Period (1603-1867). The fashionable kimono textiles being produced in the Yuzen area of Kyoto inspired the papermakers to produce small-scale paper imitations intended for use on dolls and tiny household items, such as tea tins. Many of the patterns contain highly symbolic imagery, such as cranes for long life and plum blossoms and pine boughs for beauty and longevity.

At Artcuts, we only source the finest authentic Chiyogami papers directly from the makers in Japan.
