Let’s Make: Rainbow Trail Campaign

Artcuts wooden rainbow craft

April 2, 2020

Rainbows have been popping up in windows to spread hope and positivity across the world. The rainbow trail movement is a fantastic way for people to share their gratitude to key workers and to communicate hope to friends, family and neighbours whilst social distancing.

This week, we wanted to contribute to this amazing campaign and we have created 3 bright and beautiful rainbows that you can make at home. Just follow these simple steps and get involved in this inspiring campaign…

‘Share the love’ Rainbow

You will need:

How to make:

  1. First, use the white sponge ink pad to colour the entire wooden rainbow and leave to one side.
  2. Next, we recommend counting out these numbers for each row:
    1. Red Magic – 21 x 1cm hearts.
    2. Persimmon – 32 x 0.8cm hearts.
    3. Pearlescent Lime – 16 x 1cm hearts.
    4. Pearlescent Sky Blue – 16 x 0.8cm hearts.
    5. Pretty Petunia – 10 x 1cm hearts.
  3.  Colour your mini wooden hearts by gently dabbing the ink straight onto the wood.
  4. Working row by row, apply a small dot of PVA glue to the reverse of each heart and press onto the rainbow template. Top-tip: Tweezers are super helpful when applying the hearts.
  5. Once you’ve applied the final row, glue or tape a length of ribbon to the reverse of your rainbow and your decoration is ready for hanging!

Rainbow Dream

You will need:

How to create:

  1. First, run a fine line of glue along the top edge of your rainbow, just enough for your first length of string (don’t cover the entire wooden shape in glue).
  2. Take your red string. Leaving roughly 6-7cm excess string on either side of the rainbow, quickly but carefully feed the string along the curve of the shape. Pat the string down to secure it in place.
  3. Cut off any access twine, ensuring that 6-7cm of string is dangling off each edge.
  4. Next, run a second line of glue underneath the red string and apply your next piece of twine. We recommend 2 rows per colour for an even finish.
  5. Continue and repeat these steps for each colour.
  6. To create blue string, we’ve repeatedly dabbed our blue ink pad onto the ivory string until it is completely covered. Leave to dry before gluing down the inked string. We’ve also done this to create the deep burgundy coloured strong. You can do this for any colour you’d like to create!
  7. Once you’ve finished sticking down all the string, wait for it to dry and then gently untwine the loose ends to achieve a frizzy effect.
  8. Tape or glue your organza ribbon to the reverse side and your wooden rainbow is ready for hanging!

Top Tip: For a fabulous double-sided decoration, why not add a sprinkle of glitter to the reverse side of your wooden rainbow!

Cosmic Rainbow

You will need:

How to create:

  1. First, gently dab the red magic ink pad onto your cosmic star rubber stamp. We recommend stamping your rubber stamp onto a piece of paper to get a feel for the pressure and impression.
  2. When you’re ready, begin stamping directly onto the wooden rainbow. Following the curve, repeatedly stamp stars for each row. Make sure to re-apply your ink to the stamp between every impression for a crisp print.
  3. Once you’ve completed your red row, gently dab your stamp into a damp cloth or wet wipe to clean off the excess ink. Try not to rub the stamp clean.
  4. When your stamp is clean, apply the persimmon ink pad to your cosmic star rubber stamp and continue the same steps as above for every colour.
  5. Once you’ve finished stamping your rainbow, it’s time to decorate your mini wooden clouds. For this, take 2 of each size (1cm and 1.7cm) and colour each one with the sea breeze ink pad.
  6. Next, apply PVA glue with a wet paint brush to your wooden clouds.
  7. Sprinkle iridescent glitter onto the glue and tap the reverse side to remove any access.
  8. Apply a small amount of PVA glue to the reverse side of your clouds and glue onto the ends of your decorated rainbow.
  9. Feed your white organza ribbon through the holes and your rainbow is ready for hanging!

Done! We hope you enjoy making these fun and bright rainbow decorations at home. Please share your rainbows with us on social @artcuts!
