Artcuts Exhibition Stand Handmade Fair 2014

The Handmade Fair 2014

This September, Artcuts and other carefully-selected craft suppliers will descend upon the beautiful grounds of Hampton Court Palace to take part in the Handmade Fair, the first dedicated handmade craft fair to be held in the UK. Hosted by TV’s Kirstie Allsopp, the Handmade Fair will feature craft workshops, lectures by the likes of Kath Kidston and Lou Gardiner as well as group activities where you can share your experiences with fellow craft enthusiasts.

The Handmade Fair puts learning and crafting at the heart of your day. Along with Kirstie and an assortment of expert crafters, the aim of the fair is to encourage more people to take up arts and crafts through dedicated workshops, inspirational lectures and advice from experienced artisans such as ourselves. The Handmade Fair features a packed schedule over the course of Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and details of some of the available activities are outlined below.

Super Theatre

The Super Theatre will be hosted by Kirstie and will bring together some of the talented people that she has worked with throughout her career. Super Theatre sessions are your chance to hear the latest craft trends, find out insider secrets from top experts and see for yourself how many designer products are made. With contributions from some of the leading names in embroidery, fashion and social media such as Cath Kidston, Lou Gardiner, The Crafts Council and Mr X Stitch, you’re bound to be inspired to get crafting.

Every ticket to The Handmade Fair includes one session in the Super Theatre, and each session lasts approximately 45 minutes.

Skills Workshops

The Handmade Fair’s skill workshops will provide you with an opportunity to learn a completely new crafting skill or refine one you already know and love. All of the craft experts leading the workshops have been carefully hand-picked by Kirstie and the Handmade Team.

Available skill workshops include food decoration, jewellery making, paper craft, seasonal crafting, textiles and upcycling. One skill workshop is included per general or VIP ticket, and classes last between 30 minutes and 1 hour.

Grand Makes

In the Grand Make tents you will learn how easy it is to craft something in just a few minutes and to create beautiful products to use in your home, at a party or as a gift. You will have the opportunity to learn from fellow craft enthusiasts and exchange tips and ideas on future projects.

Origami floristry and gift wrapping are covered at this year’s event, and one Grand Make session is included with every purchase of a general or VIP ticket. Each craft making session lasts approximately 30 mins.

Prima Make & Take Theatre

Enjoy small and exclusive workshops in the Prima Make & Take Theatre, where hand-picked craft experts will guide you in making your very own gorgeous and creative arts and crafts. Whether you’re an experienced crafter or a complete beginner looking to learn new skills, you’re guaranteed to have fun and be inspired to make something beautiful that you can take home.

Learn how to create a Christmas wreath with craftwork cards, discover how to create your own fabulous soft furnishings and learn how to crochet like a pro. Other workshops will show you how to make stuffed fabric letters, re-cover fabric lampshades and even make concertina-style notebooks. There really is something for everyone.

All workshops last one hour and cost £10 each.

Etsy Business School

If you like the idea of earning money doing what you love, the Etsy Business School is the place to be at the Handmade Fair. Seasoned professionals and full-time crafters will be on hand to show you how to turn your hobby into an income and will provide you with all the tools you need to start making money by selling your craft projects on Etsy.

Subjects covered include setting up a shop on Etsy, how to get the most out of social media and how to take beautiful product photography. All sessions are completely free and last for approximately 30 minutes.

We will be exhibiting our range of wooden shapes and embelishments at the Handmade Fair, so please do take a moment to pay us a visit.

How We Make Our Wooden Craft Shapes

Customers and friends often ask us how we make our wooden craft shapes, and it is only when we explain the manufacturing process to them that we realise just how complex making wooden cut-outs, shapes and blanks can be. The finished product may only be a simple wooden heart or letter, but a huge amount of work goes into every craft shape that we manufacture. From the initial concept through to the design and laser cutting of the shape, everything is created in-house by our small family-run team of craft enthusiasts.

Caroles Card“We laser cut wooden craft shapes from plywood” is our normal response, which is a potted summary to the huge range of wooden craft shapes that we produce for our many craft retail and trade customers. However, that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of how these ostensibly simple shapes come into being. Using powerful software, state-of-the-art laser cutting technology and the finest quality plywood available, every single one of our wooden craft shapes is the result of endless hours of experimentation by three very dedicated crafters!

Carols HangersAs any good designer will tell you, “everything starts with a sketch”, and at Art Cuts we’re no different. We often get ideas for new craft shapes while speaking to people at the various craft fairs and exhibitions that we attend throughout the year, and when we decide to produce a new craft shape our daughter will start to sketch out the wooden shape. All of our designs are exclusive to us and are designed in-house – a process that can take several hours or even days depending on the complexity of the design. When we are 100% happy with the finished sketch we then take the drawing and begin the task of laser cutting the design out of plywood.

Moiras CowWhen we set up Art Cuts, we wanted to produce quality wooden craft shapes that we would want to use ourselves. We spent several months sourcing the best quality birch plywood on the market to cut our shapes from. Our laser cut shapes have a very bright surface and only faint wood grain on both sides. We wanted to guarantee that the products we manufacture are of the highest quality, and we believe that they are the finest wooden craft shapes that you can buy.

Personalised HeartsArt Cuts co-founder Derek then begins the painstaking process of turning the sketch into a beautiful wood craft shape that will form the basis of countless craft projects. Using all of his woodworking skills and expertise, Derek must first configure our state-of-the-art precision laser cutter to cut the shape from a sheet of birch plywood – a task that can involve a great deal of trial and error in order to get right. The design will often have to be resized before it is cut, and sometimes we have to go right back to the drawing board in order to produce a wooden craft shape that we are happy with.

Plain DecorationsOnce Derek has laser the cut the design, his wife Rebecca then carefully packs the item and sends it straight to the customer. Organised and super-efficient, Rebecca is in charge of the day-to-day operation of the business and manages everything from stock control to invoicing and shipping. She is also in charge of managing the Art Cuts eBay store, all of our social media profiles as well as adding the various wooden shapes and embellishments that we make to our shop. Rebecca is also the person you’ll speak to when you get in touch with us by email or phone, as she is also responsible for providing help and advice whenever you need it. In fact, you could say that Rebecca is the brains behind the business!

At Art Cuts we also have a small team of demonstrators who work with us to create our beautiful craft shapes and embellishments. We are always adding new craft shapes, kits and projects to our shop, and all of our products can be used by all crafters, from complete beginners to the more experienced.

Our wooden cutouts and shapes make an excellent addition to any craft project. They are extremely versatile and can be drawn on, painted, waxed and varnished, and their uses really are limited only by your imagination.
